Guadalcacín (Cadiz) hosted last weekend the fifth edition of the CrossFit 'Breaking Barriers' against cancer organized by the b2b box. A competition, which took place in the facilities of the Activa Club of Jerez, full of novelties, and already consolidated in the calendar of lovers of this sport. The funds raised from registrations and collaborating companies have been allocated to theSpanish Association against Cancer.
Three days of CrossFit competition in two different locations and 120 athletes from all over Spain - previously classified - and with a swimming test.
Daniel Lorenzo, promoter of the race and headcoach of the b2b box, emphasizes that "the access of the athletes to the final phase takes place through two online tests and the best athletes are those who access the face to face phase which took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday". This year, more than 500 athletes participated in the online qualification phase. "The online phase is open to the whole country from Menorca, the Canary Islands, Barcelona, Madrid or Asturias. It is also the first year that I do not have to put material and it is the RUSTER sports equipment company that wanted to participate in the event and carry out the installation", adds.
The competition consisted of six events in different categories RX, climbing, master 35 and master 40 and one of these is swimming in the Activa Club.
In addition, Lorenzo is adamant about the solidarity of the competition and wants the athletes participating in his competition to do so only for one purpose, that of raising funds for theAECC. "Prizes are prizes in sports equipment, they will never have cash prizes, because this will attract athletes that I don't want to have". I always want to have athletes who want to come for the cause," he says.
FROM LOS ANGELES TO BREAKING BARRIERS TO JEREZ
The story of this solidarity competition begins around 2002 in Los Angeles (USA), where Daniel Lorenzo lived for five years. "In Los Angeles I met the CrossFit and joined a boxing event, the 'Crush Cancer'. It is an international event that raises funds for the fight against cancer. My coach was the one who promoted the initiative because his brother died at the time. "The experience I had and the atmosphere in those Championships was brutal and was something that I would have liked to have in my box Yes or Yes", adds the promoter of 'Breakin Barriers'.
Once settled in Jerez, he opened his box, and "after 3 months I made my first 'Breaking Barriers' only with the athletes I had. If we were 70-80 athletes, 60 signed up. We were raising funds and the event grew year by year. The following year we opened to athletes from other pits, and people came a bit more local, the third year we changed the ship and people came from further afield from Madrid.
Over the years, the competition has taken shape and level. Starting in 2018, trials will take place outside the b2b boxing facilities. The municipality of Guadalcacín has given them the pavilion and this year they also have the swimming pools of the Activa Club of Jerez. The event, as its founder points out, has grown both "in athletic ability and in days and trials" with a single purpose, the fight against cancer.
