This January 26th we were able to experience the final of the Freakest Challenge, an event that we sponsored in an unbeatable atmosphere and with luxury assistants such as the current "Fittest On Earth" Matt Fraser, or the Icelandic athlete Sara Sigmundottir who attended one of the most exciting finals with a spectacular and vibrant performance for the event assistants.
In order to reach this final stage, the teams composed of two girls and two boys, with a maximum of 42 boxes, had to qualify through 3 weeks of online qualification. The teams that made it to the final were the following:
- CROSSFIT 77 FEET
- CROSSFIT 4 FRIENDS
- CROSSITUS AREA
- DIR MARAGALL BOX
- WORLD CROSSITE
- GYRONA CROSSFIT
- CROSSFIT PILOTS
- CROSSFIT QUO LABORATORY
The location of the event was the Sant Jordi Club in Barcelona, with free admission, but with a limited capacity for over 1800 participants. Last year the Finnish Jonne Koski joined the party and this year she exceeded all expectations.
Sara Sigmundsdóttir led the group of girls, accompanied by the young Icelandic promise Sól Sigurdardóttir and the young Hungarian athlete Laura Horvath. And on the male side no less than the fitest man on the planet, Matt Fraser, accompanied by Swedish Lukas Hogberg.
The Freakest Challenge 2019 is not a team competition as we are used to. Only the best 8 of the online qualification are those who have been on the field, consisting of a large central rack and that as the competition progressed, was changing materials for the different WOD, weightlifting bars, kettlebells, obstacles for rocks, rowing, assault bikes, balls and bags of 50 and 75 kilos, boxes, rings and lots of light games, accompanied by a great DJ who added everything together made the audience vibrate in each WOD and especially in the final.
The system that followed the competition is not the conventional "league" style where all teams run all the WOD and win the most points added, in this case it was through a system of eliminations, where an initial draw defined the table of matches.
Damian Martinez, Fabian Beneito, Elena Carratalá and Sara Valera were the winners of this edition, winning all the events they faced, returning both in the final and semifinals and not throwing in the towel at any time of the competition.
